Ok, so sometimes they do make things difficult, but that’s not the real issue.  Before we always managed to find a balance.  Lately, our balance is all thrown off.

Bear came in yesterday and asked me if we could have a drawing contest using my fancy pencils. I was busy reorganizing the playroom, getting ready for round 2 of my Kon Mari challenge. I still had an article to write, dinner to make, and my head was starting to hurt already.

Whenever this happens, I have two conflicting thoughts:

First thought: of course I should drop everything I am doing and play with my kid. She obviously needs some love and I want her to know that she is the most important thing in my life. Buuuttttt…… Then there is Thought two: I do so much for them already. Can’t she see that I am cleaning the playroom for

I do so much for them already. Can’t she see that I am cleaning the playroom for her.  Here I am, been sick all week and what am I doing but helping them. Don’t I give enough?

Is it just me?

I give my kids so, so much. But I also give them a lot that doesn’t matter. For that matter, I give myself a lot of things that really don’t matter. I am busy, but not always productive.

So, I started to question, the way I tend to do.  It used to be so easy, when did it get so hard? It got hard when inlet things get out of whack. Here are 5 things I do to beat the busyness and still get it all done.

It got hard when I let my priorities get out of whack. Here are 5 things I do to beat the busyness and still get it all done.

Here are 5 things I do to beat the busyness and still get it all done.

1. Step back

Give yourself a little breather and check in with your guts about where it wants to take you. I ask my kids to come back in 5 minutes and I will have an answer for them. Usually this means they are back in 35 seconds, so I have learned to gut check fast. Tips:

5’s keep popping up in my life, so here’s a great rule of 5’s for you. Ask yourself is this going to important in 5 seconds, 5 minutes, 5 days, 5 years… As far as you want to take it. It’s not hard and fast, but it can give you perspective about what’s important.

Ask yourself how you will feel at the end of the day if you chose this over that. What makes you feel good is usually the right answer.

2. Set Time Limits

They don’t have to be set in stone, but give yourself a rough estimate of how long you want to send on a certain activity, then train yourself to stick to it. Might take some discipline (avoid the netflix sirens song at all cost!), but totally worth it to stay on track.

3. Carve out guilt free time for you

Yes, every day. I know this is easier said than done, but in order to really be present with your kids, you have to have a break. Invoke some Union rules and demand 1 hour of alone time for every 8 with kids. Trust me, everyone will thank you in the end. Make sure you spend this time at play. Play invigorates you, re energizes you, and bring confidence and joy into your life. Do something fun!

4. Look for big wins

Find the 5 most important things in your life and do those every day.

5. Let yourself off the hook

You don’t have to have it all together. It’s ok to go to bed with dishes in the sink sometimes. Don’t feel bad if it didn’t work out today. Write it off and try again tomorrow.

Bonus tip: Life is all about priorities.  Get real clear about what yours are.  Once you know that, it’s easy to check your actions against them and adjust as necessary.

What do you do when life gets too busy?
